  D

Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language, but few people are fairly proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the basic reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages any better than they speak native language is that they fail to understand the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill — one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be gained by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while realizing the importance of a good accent, often neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught, the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the class time to this, and get students to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving their close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the moment to take second place.

Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique.

It’s also possible to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students’ pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and class time spent on pronunciation may well be wasted.

  【答案解析】

  1.【答案】D。解析:考查主旨大意题。通读全文且根据文章第一句话可知,作者一直在说外国语言的发音应该被认真的训练。

2.【答案】A。解析:考查细节理解题。根据第一段:But I suggest that the basic reason......is that they fail to understand the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce.可知答案为 A。

  3.【答案】C。解析:考查细节判断题。根据第二段的那一句话可知答案为 C。

  4.【答案】A。解析:考查细节判断题。通读全文,B 项在第一段有所提及;waste time 在最后一段,C 项偷换主语;D 项通过第一段第二句话可直接排除。

  5.【答案】A。解析:考查作者态度题。最后一段中,Unless 一句话可看出作者认为除非一个老师清楚地认识到英语发音与其他语言发音之间的不同,否则这个老师教不好发音的。再加上上文提到的教学现状,发音教学并不是特别受重视,可知作者是持怀疑态度的。故选 A。
